Playing Next to Friends, Not With Them: Parallel Play

Parallel play, playing side by side but separately, is common at ages 2–3 and is a step toward playing together.

A child who sits and plays next to a friend but doesn't actually play with them. Playing side by side but separately like this is called parallel play, and it's a common form of play for children ages 2–3.

Parallel play is a step toward playing together

Even though they're playing separately next to a friend, that time is how your child gets ready to join in and enjoy playing with friends later on. Rather than rushing them because they don't play together yet, remember that parallel play is a stage of its own.
