Child Wanders During Meals? Look at Their Body First
A child who wanders during meals may be dealing with how their body feels rather than manners, and getting the body ready first helps them sit longer.
When a child keeps wandering around during meals, it's easy to think they're being rude or can't focus. But the reason they can't sit still for even a moment at what should be a fun mealtime may lie in how their body is feeling. That's why it's better to look at their body first, rather than just trying to correct the wandering.
Four mealtime ideas that support the body
- Before eating, do some light physical activity to burn off energy and meet their sensory needs
- Help them sit in a stable position with their feet touching the floor
- Start with very short mealtimes so they can feel a sense of accomplishment
- Allow short movement breaks in the middle of the meal
Once the body is ready and self-regulation develops, sitting time gradually gets longer. Rather than scolding a child who wanders away from the table, go slowly and wait for them at their own pace.
