Wound Up at Bedtime? It May Be a Sign of Tiredness
Getting more excited when it's time to sleep may be less about wanting to play and more a sign that your child is too worn out to settle.
A child who played happily all day suddenly starts running around and getting excited the moment the lights go off. It's easy to scold, thinking "Do they just want to keep playing?", but getting wound up before bed may actually be a sign that your child is very worn out, in other words, a way of showing tiredness.
How to help a child showing signs of tiredness
- Cut back on rough, high-energy play
- Build a consistent routine
- Switch to calm activities
- Offer steady, soothing input
That burst of energy right before bed may not mean "I want to play more!" It's closer to a sign of tiredness that says, "I'm so tired I can't settle down!" Tonight, instead of scolding a child who's wound up at bedtime, try holding them close and offering a sense of calm and security.
