Tears Over Hair Ties: Scalp Sensitivity in Kids

A child who refuses to have their hair tied up may not be stubborn. The pulling sensation on the scalp may simply feel much stronger to them.

Tears before the hair tie is even on: many parents call this the “hair-tying battle.” Before chalking it up to stubbornness, it's worth looking at scalp sensitivity first, because a child's sensitive scalp may be where the tears begin.

Why do kids hate having their hair tied?

The feeling of hair being pulled can feel much stronger and more uncomfortable to a child than it does to an adult. Refusing to have their hair tied may not be stubbornness at all, but a way of avoiding that discomfort.

Steps to turn discomfort into comfort

  • Start brushing gently.
  • Don't pull hard while tying their hair.
  • Finish as quickly as you can.
  • Tying their hair while they watch in the mirror can also help.

When the sensations coming through the scalp change, the reaction of a child who used to cry over hair ties changes, too.
