Kids Who Rock Their Bodies: The Role of Movement
Repetitive rocking may not be just a habit. It can be one of the ways your child regulates themselves.
Your child rocks back and forth while sitting in a chair, even while watching TV. You may worry it's a sign of anxiety, but repetitive movement may be more than just a habit.
What your child feels and regulates by rocking
By rocking, children feel movement, sense where their body is, and regulate themselves. You'll often see rocking at moments like these:
- While sitting in a chair
- While watching TV
- While thinking
- When bored (it shows up more often then)
There are times when children need to move, and some kids learn and self-regulate through movement. Instead of "Why is my child doing that?", try asking first, "What are they feeling?" and watch for when your child rocks the most.
