Why Kids Melt Down Only With Mom After a Long Day
Melting down only with Mom may be your child letting go of a day's worth of held-in feelings and tension with the safest person they know.
Some kids get through daycare with no problems at all, yet the moment they get home, the tantrums start, and only with Mom. They're fine with Dad, but burst into tears as soon as they see Mom. It's completely natural to feel hurt and wonder, "Why only me?"
Your child at daycare vs. your child at home
After spending so much energy and staying on guard all day, children come home and let go of the feelings and tension they've been holding in, with Mom. It's not about making things hard for her. It may be because Mom is the safest place they have, where it's okay to make mistakes, to cry, and to ask for help.
Instead of "Why only me?", try "How hard did you work today?"
Behind the tantrums and the constant calling for Mom, there may be a simple message: "You're the one I feel most at ease with." When your child starts to melt down, first think about how hard they worked to get through the day. It can also help to notice how your child winds down their day at home.
