When Your Child Dislikes Chewy Foods: Oral Sensitivity

For a child who avoids chewy foods, slowly widening the range from comfortable textures matters more than getting them to eat a lot.

When your child leaves the meat on their plate and won't take a single bite of squid, you may start worrying that they're an extremely picky eater.

Why chewy foods can feel like a lot

Compared with soft foods, chewy foods demand much more chewing and jaw movement. A child whose mouth is sensitive to sensations, or who hasn't had much chewing experience yet, may find chewy textures themselves hard to handle.

What to avoid and what to try

There are three common mistakes: suddenly offering chewy foods first, insisting they finish everything, and pressuring them with "You have to eat it."

Instead, start from textures your child eats comfortably and widen the range little by little.

  • Tofu
  • Rolled omelet
  • Well-cooked meat
  • Thinly shredded chicken

For a child who dislikes chewy foods, what matters isn't how much they eat, but the experience of trying many different textures. The more sensitive your child's mouth is, the more important it is to first figure out which textures they find hardest.
