When Your Child Only Spins the Wheels on Toy Cars
Rather than judging a child by wheel-spinning alone, it helps to see whether other kinds of play, including play with people, are happening too.
Your child doesn't roll the toy car along. They just keep spinning the wheels. Many parents feel a flash of worry when they see this.
But it's hard to judge a child based on one behavior on its own. Your child may simply be drawn to the spinning motion, the way it changes over and over, the way light reflects off it, or the feeling under their fingertips.
Play patterns to look at together
- Do they also roll the car or play with it in other ways?
- Do they play back and forth with another person and keep it going?
- Do they show interest in other toys, too?
Your child's play as a whole tells you much more than wheel-spinning alone. If your child only spins the wheels, take some time to notice what they're like in other kinds of play.
