Kids Who Only Eat Soft Foods: Texture and the Effort of Chewing

Before calling it picky eating, start from the textures your child is comfortable with and widen the range little by little.

When a child only wants soft foods, it helps to look beyond taste to food texture and how much effort chewing takes. A child who happily eats porridge, noodles, and tofu but clamps their mouth shut when meat or vegetables appear can make you wonder, "Is this extreme picky eating?" But the reason may have more to do with texture than flavor.

Soft foods and chewy foods are chewed differently

Soft foods move around the mouth fairly easily and don't need much chewing. Hard or chewy foods are a different story. They take more work from the jaw and tongue, and they take longer to chew.

What to watch for at mealtime

  • Eats soft foods well
  • Spits out chewy foods like meat
  • Chews vegetables for a long time
  • Pushes food back out of their mouth while chewing

When you see this, instead of suddenly offering foods with harder textures, start from the textures your child is comfortable with and widen the range little by little. If you swap the question "Why will they only eat this?" for "Which textures feel comfortable?", you'll start to see how your child experiences food through texture.
