Holding Pictures Close to the Eyes: Is It a Vision Problem?
Don't decide it's a vision issue from one habit alone. Start by noticing when your child does it.
Does your child hold pictures or toys right up to their nose? Does that mean their eyesight is poor? This one behavior isn't enough to tell. The place to start is noticing the situations in which your child looks at things up close.
Can you tell eyesight from close viewing alone?
When children want to look at small details, they often naturally bring objects close to their eyes. So it's hard to draw a conclusion just because a child looks at pictures up close.
Checkpoints to look at together
- Do they bring things close only when looking at small pictures?
- Do they also move closer when looking at things far away?
- Do they often squint?
- Do they tilt their head to look?
- Do they often rub their eyes?
If close viewing keeps happening along with squinting or signs of discomfort, it's a good idea to have their eyesight or visual function checked. Rather than labeling the behavior a problem right away, start by watching when it happens. That observation is the first clue to understanding your child.
