Kids Who Carry a Stuffed Animal Everywhere: Comfort in Familiar Things

Rather than taking it away, notice when your child reaches for it and help them find comfort in other ways too.

Some children always bring a blanket, stuffed animal, or small toy wherever they go. There may come a moment when you think, "Don't they need to let go of it by now?" But for a child, a familiar object can mean more than just a thing.

The sensations held in a familiar object

The smell they always notice, the texture they always touch, the shape they know by heart: the sensations a child has experienced again and again live in that object. That's why they may reach for a particular item like a stuffed animal more when going somewhere new, before falling asleep, or when they're tired or nervous.

Observe before taking it away

Before forcing your child to give up the stuffed animal, first notice when they reach for it most often. Then help them find a sense of security through other paths besides the familiar object, such as favorite games, a cozy space, and time with you. What your child truly needs may be less the object itself and more the comfort and familiarity it brings.
