Why Some Kids Squeeze into Tight Spaces: Feeling It Through the Body
A child who seeks out tight spaces may be feeling where their body is, so guide that into safe play.
Tight spaces are a great place for a child to feel where their body is. If your child squeezes into every small gap they find, like between the couch and the wall or under a desk, they may be enjoying the feeling of many parts of their body touching the things around them.
Play that kids who love tight spaces enjoy
Children who like squeezing into tight spots often enjoy whole-body play, such as wedging themselves between cushions, burrowing under blankets, sitting inside a big box, or crawling through a tunnel.
So if you often see your child trying to squeeze into narrow gaps, rather than simply stopping them, guide them toward play in a safe place that gives a similar feeling. Shifting the question from "Why would they crawl into that tiny space?" to "What are they feeling in that space?" can bring you one step closer to understanding your child's behavior.
